Vandella, Midnight Moonshiners at Crocker Art Museum

DLMC is proud to join Sacramento’s Crocker Art Museum in support of its May 8th, 2014 Art Mix Spoke-tacular

After all, May is bike month, and if there is one thing Davis appreciates as much as great live music it’s a bike. Plan to be there 5-9pm for DJs, art bikes, a bicycle fashion show, and – yes – live music curated by the Davis Live Music Collective, proudly presenting Vandella with special guest Midnight Moonshiners.

This is a ticketed event so get yours here (DLMC and Crocker members are free).

Vandella
Vandella

“Vandella draws their music from Motown, classic rock, Southern rock, folk-rock, blues, and modern-day sounds of indie pop/rock. It’s like if Ryan Adams was backed by The Band, or Jenny Lewis took over for Jay Farrar and Jeff Tweedy in Uncle Tupelo. It’s 1970’s rock via 1990.”

Hailing from San Francisco, Vandella’s music takes listeners from the gulches of swampy, guitar-driven rock and the dusty twang of Americana to the amber honey of classic soul.

Tracey Holland (vocals, percussion) and Chris Tye (guitar, vocals) struck up a friendship back in 2004 while at Musician’s Institute in LA. Coming from starkly different musical backgrounds, the two close friends have been writing and playing in bands together ever since- eventually ending up in San Francisco in 2008, where Vandella was born. With shades of a Buckingham-Nicks dynamic, the two close friends and songwriters form the creative nucleus of the band, with Fritz Mueller (bass) and Dan Miller-Schroeder (drums) anchoring things down with a solid foundation.

What really sets Vandella apart is a raucous, infectious live show- and the powerhouse vocals of lead singer Tracey Holland. Garnering comparisons to the likes of Neko Case, Jenny Lewis, and that most enigmatic of rock’s frontwomen, Janis Joplin, Holland balances an impressive set of pipes atop a “ball of energy” live delivery- commanding audiences’ attention by banging on a cowbell, beating a floor tom, or jumping offstage to join in on the ensuing dance frenzy with the crowd. There’s a sense of can’t-quite-put-your-finger-on-it-familiar offered up with a fresh twist- yet Vandella seems to shine while straddling the lines; having a hell of a time and not afraid to show it.

Hailing from all parts valley and foothill, Midnight Moonshiners are Parker McDonald, Danielle Driscoll, Travis Sinel, and Andrew Hotz, plus how ever many insanely talented local musicians they can coax onto stage in a given night. Above all they are fearless and ready for a good time.
